Common mistake

Watch the signs inside the discriminant. Here \( -4ac = -4(2)(-5) = +40 \), not \( -40 \). A misplaced negative is the most frequent quadratic error.

Example 3: A system of equations

Solve the system \( x + y = 7 \) and \( 2x - y = 2 \) by elimination.

Add the two equations so that \( y \) cancels:
